The United States has been increasingly concerned about the transfer of sensitive technology to China, particularly in the semiconductor sector. The US government has imposed restrictions on the export of technology to Chinese companies, citing national security concerns. The US fears that China could use this technology for military purposes, such as developing advanced weapons systems.

Ban on Micron in China

China’s internet regulator announced a security review of Micron’s products sold in the country, which has raised concerns in the US. Micron is a leading manufacturer of memory chips used in electronic devices. If Micron is banned from selling chips in China, it could create a market gap that other companies might seek to fill.

US Asks South Korea to Help

The United States has reportedly asked South Korea to refrain from filling any market gap in China in the event that Micron is banned from selling chips. The US is concerned that China could use the technology used in chipmaking for military purposes. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are major chipmakers in South Korea, and they could potentially benefit from any ban on Micron.

South Korean President’s Visit to the US

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is visiting the United States, and he is expected to discuss the issue of semiconductor exports with Vice President Joe Biden. This visit is significant as it marks the 70th anniversary of the alliance between the United States and South Korea.

Cooperation Between the US and South Korea

The Financial Times has reported that the Biden and Yoon administrations have been working together to coordinate investments in the semiconductor sector, protect critical technologies, and combat economic coercion. The US and South Korea are important allies in the region, and they are both committed to maintaining a balance of power in the Asia-Pacific region.
