Reliance Jio has entered into a strategic partnership with SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s satellite broadband services in India. The collaboration is contingent on SpaceX obtaining regulatory approvals from the Indian government, including clearance from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Center (IN-SPACe).
The Objective of the Partnership
The primary aim of this collaboration is to enhance broadband accessibility across India, especially in remote and rural regions. By combining Jio’s extensive data infrastructure with SpaceX’s Starlink low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network, the companies plan to offer customers high-speed, low-latency internet services in areas where traditional fiber networks are impractical.
Jio also intends to leverage its widespread retail network and online platforms to distribute Starlink hardware while providing installation and customer support services.
Complementing Jio’s Broadband Ecosystem
Starlink will serve as a complementary solution to Jio’s existing broadband offerings, including JioFiber and JioAirFiber. The LEO satellite-based internet service will fill connectivity gaps in hard-to-reach locations, ensuring seamless digital access for businesses, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and government services.

Regulatory Approval and Competition in the Satellite Broadband Sector
Despite the agreement, the launch of Starlink in India remains subject to regulatory approvals. This partnership comes at a time when India’s satellite broadband sector is experiencing rapid growth, with Jio’s joint venture with SES and Airtel-backed Eutelsat OneWeb already securing GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite) licenses.
