Chinese automaker BYD is making significant strides in Malaysia’s electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of its latest offering, the Dolphin compact EV. This move comes on the heels of the brand’s debut of passenger EVs in Malaysia in December 2022, signaling a clear commitment to expanding its presence in the region.
The Dolphin becomes the second model to hit Malaysian roads under the BYD banner, following the successful introduction of the Atto 3 last December. Spearheading the distribution of these new models in Malaysia is Sime Darby Motors, a prominent automotive group known for its commitment to innovation and sustainability. Interestingly, the BYD Dolphin has been capturing attention in China since August 21, 2021, and is now set to make waves in Malaysia’s burgeoning EV landscape.
The official launch of the BYD Dolphin took place on July 27, marking a pivotal moment in the brand’s ongoing journey to bring accessible electric mobility to Malaysians. In this market, the Dolphin is being offered in two distinct versions, showcasing a slight departure from the three available options in China. This tailored approach aims to cater to the specific preferences and demands of Malaysian consumers. With dimensions measuring 4,125 x 1,770 x 1,570mm and a wheelbase of 2,700mm, the Dolphin strikes a balance between compact size and spacious interiors.
The BYD Atto 3, which is currently available at eight outlets across Malaysia, has proven to be a remarkable success. The brand’s strategic partnership with Sime Darby Motors, solidified in October 2022, laid the groundwork for the importation of BYD passenger EVs. This collaboration was first showcased with the introduction of the Atto 3 in December 2022, effectively marking the beginning of a new era of electrified transportation in Malaysia. This aligns perfectly with BYD’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
The Dolphin’s arrival in Malaysia brings with it an exciting range of offerings. Two distinct models, priced at 99,900 ringgit ($21,932) and 124,900 ringgit ($27,420) respectively, are poised to capture the attention of the Malaysian market. Notably, the three Dolphin models launched in China bore price tags ranging from approximately $16,270 to $19,064 upon their initial release, showcasing BYD’s commitment to providing affordable yet advanced EV options.
As the world moves towards a more sustainable future, BYD’s expansion in Malaysia holds great promise. With a focus on innovation, efficiency, and accessible EV solutions, BYD aims to shape the automotive landscape and drive Malaysia’s transition towards cleaner and greener transportation. The Dolphin’s introduction underscores BYD’s dedication to delivering electric mobility that is not only cutting-edge but also environmentally responsible, contributing to a brighter and more sustainable future for all.
