Kawasaki, a renowned name in the world of motorcycles, has officially entered the electric two-wheeler market with the exciting launch of the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 electric motorcycles. These new offerings from Kawasaki are inspired by the brand’s popular gasoline-powered entry-level models and are set to make their debut in 2024.

Emulating Iconic Gasoline Models

Kawasaki has joined the league of traditional motorcycle manufacturers venturing into the electric segment. The Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 take their design cues from the beloved Ninja 400 and Z400 models, bringing an electrifying twist to these iconic bikes. While the specifications of these electric models were partially revealed through certification documents last month, Kawasaki has now made it official, shedding light on the key details.

Entry-Level Performance

It’s important to note that both the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 are entry-level electric motorcycles, targeting a different niche than high-performance, long-distance electric bikes. These models are in line with 150cc gasoline-powered motorcycles, making them ideal for urban commuting.

Power and Speed

Under the hood, both models are equipped with air-cooled, interior permanent magnet synchronous motors that deliver a maximum output of 9kW, with a continuous output of 6kW and a torque of 29Nm. These electric bikes boast a top speed of 62mph, with an impressive E-boost feature that temporarily pushes the speed limit to 54mph after 15 seconds, providing extra acceleration when needed, especially in urban traffic.

Tech-Savvy Features

The Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 come with a modern 4.3-inch TFT instrument cluster, offering various layouts to cater to riders’ preferences. They feature two power modes – road and eco – and a convenient walk mode for parking. The walk mode allows the bike to be moved forward or backward at a maximum speed of 3mph and 2mph, respectively, by simply twisting the throttle.

Swappable Batteries and Extended Range

These electric bikes are equipped with two Li-ion battery packs that combine to offer a range of 44 miles on a full charge. What’s interesting is that the batteries are swappable, allowing riders to extend their range by quickly replacing them. Charging is efficient, with a full charge taking 3.7 hours and a 20-80% charge achievable in just 1.6 hours.

Impressive Build and Lightweight

The Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 feature a robust steel trellis chassis, 41mm telescopic forks, mono-shock rear suspension, and 17-inch wheels. In terms of weight, both models are impressively lightweight, weighing under 140kg, with the Ninja e-1 slightly edging out its counterpart. These electric motorcycles are significantly lighter than their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts, offering enhanced agility and handling.

European Market Debut

Kawasaki is set to introduce the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 electric motorcycles in the European and UK markets. While the bikes fall under the A1 license category, exact pricing and release information have not yet been disclosed by Kawasaki.

With the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1, Kawasaki is making a bold statement in the electric motorcycle arena, catering to the needs of urban riders with their entry-level performance, swappable batteries, and tech-savvy features. The arrival of these electric models signifies Kawasaki’s commitment to embracing the future of two-wheeled transportation.
