This recall was prompted by potential problems with the mechanical disc brakes, affecting a substantial portion of the XP 3.0 bike inventory.

CPSC Announces Voluntary Recall

The recall was officially announced by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). It is a voluntary recall initiated by Lectric eBikes in response to concerns about the reliability of the mechanical brake systems on their XP 3.0 e-bikes. These concerns centered around the quality and performance of the mechanical brake calipers used in these e-bikes.

45,000 XP 3.0 Bikes Affected

Approximately 45,000 XP 3.0 e-bikes were sold between November 2022 and May 2023, all of which were equipped with the mechanical disc brake system in question. While only four incidents related to brake failure have been reported so far, the company recognized the potential risks associated with these brakes. A failure in the mechanical disc brake calipers could result in a loss of control, increasing the likelihood of accidents and rider injuries.

Swift Action and Safety Enhancements

In response to these concerns, Lectric eBikes swiftly took action. In May 2023, they halted the sale of the XP 3.0 e-bike model. To enhance rider safety, the company made a significant upgrade by transitioning to hydraulic disc brakes, known for their superior performance and reliability.

Free Upgrade Kits and Assistance

Lectric also demonstrated its commitment to customer safety by providing free upgrade kits to existing owners of the affected XP 3.0 e-bikes. These kits are designed for easy installation and typically take just 15 minutes to complete. Additionally, the company offered to cover the costs associated with having the upgrade performed at a local bike shop, ensuring that riders could easily access the necessary safety enhancements.

Encouraging Response and Ongoing Safety Measures

To facilitate the upgrade process and promote rider safety, Lectric made the XP 3.0 e-bike disc brake upgrade kits readily available. They have actively reached out to owners of the affected units, taking proactive measures to address potential safety issues. Lectric also issued a service notice to all impacted bike owners, providing guidance on how to inspect and adjust their brakes properly, reducing the risk of brake-related incidents.

It’s worth noting that nearly half of the affected bike owners have already taken advantage of the disc brake upgrade policy, demonstrating their commitment to safe and enjoyable e-bike experiences.
