Located in the Netherlands, the EV battery swap station developed by NIO and Shell is capable of performing an impressive 312 battery swaps per day. This level of efficiency surpasses that of similarly-sized Tesla SuperCharger platforms, which can only accommodate around 40 cars daily.
NIO, which already operates several successful swap stations in China, announced its partnership with Shell in 2021. The new NIO-Shell battery swap station can charge up to 13 batteries simultaneously at a rate of 20-80kW per hour.
The Shell-NIO charge station offers enhanced capabilities to motorists accessing its services. With faster charging speeds, the station is designed to reduce waiting times and queues. While this is not NIO’s first charging station in Europe, it marks its first collaboration with Shell, solidifying its commitment to transforming the EV charging landscape.
The choice of the Netherlands as the launch location carries symbolic significance, as the country has long been at the forefront of sustainable initiatives. In addition to the new battery swap station, NIO has already established over 16 swap stations across Europe, along with a network of charging stations.
The partnership between Shell and NIO extends beyond Europe. The two companies have ambitious plans to deploy up to 100 battery swap stations in China by 2025, further accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles in the world’s largest automotive market.

NIO also anticipates a significant increase in the number of battery swap stations across the Netherlands and Europe in the coming years, reflecting the growing demand for efficient and convenient charging solutions.
As energy giants like Shell prepare for a future beyond fossil fuels, collaborations with innovative EV manufacturers like NIO are crucial in driving sustainable transportation forward. The introduction of Europe’s first battery swap station sets a precedent for future advancements in EV charging infrastructure, enabling motorists to embrace electric mobility with ease and confidence.
