According to a new leak by DSCC analyst Ross Young, Apple Watch models with microLED display technology will not be released until the second half of 2025. MicroLED displays are known to offer improved brightness levels and color contrast compared to traditional OLED panels.
Contradicting earlier reports that claimed the Apple Watch Ultra with microLED display would arrive by the end of 2024, Young’s tweet suggests that Apple’s upcoming wearable device will take longer to develop.
Apple currently uses OLED displays for its wearables, and it was previously believed that the company would introduce upgraded microLED displays next year. However, the delay suggests that Apple may be taking its time to perfect the technology before implementing it in their devices.
The shift to microLED displays is expected not only for the Apple Watch but also for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac units in the future. Using in-house displays will reduce Apple’s reliance on other companies like Samsung and LG.
Meanwhile, Samsung Display has reportedly formed a team to commercialize microLED displays for Galaxy smartwatches, and they aim to complete the development within this year. Samsung is also planning to adopt microLED displays for its future Galaxy series wearables, replacing the current OLED displays.
