“Met Mobile industry to review progress. The industry has grown 20 times in 9 years. 2014: 78% import-dependent 2023: 99.2% of all mobiles sold in India are ‘Made In India’,” Vaishnaw asserted after extensive discussions with industry stakeholders.
The numbers speak volumes: from a significant 78% import dependency in 2014, India has steadily advanced, with an impressive 99.2% of mobile devices now ‘Made in India.’ This monumental shift underscores the industry’s substantial progress and transformation over the past decade.
Several key manufacturers, including BBK-owned Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, and Xiaomi, have established production and assembly facilities in India. Notably, even iPhones are now assembled in India, spanning across Foxconn’s Tamil Nadu plant and other facilities like Winstron and Pegatron.
This year witnessed the launch of ‘Assembled in India’ iPhone 15 models, catering directly to the Indian market from the very day of their launch.
Moreover, Tata Group’s recent acquisition of Winstron’s India operations has forecasted a promising future. With plans to commence iPhone manufacturing within two and a half years, the Tata Companies’ move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s PLI scheme, as lauded by Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India’s Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology.
Apple’s intensified focus on the Indian market is evident with the inauguration of two official Apple stores – Apple BKC in Mumbai and Apple Saket in New Delhi – further solidifying its commitment and interest in India’s tech landscape.
