SK Hynix, a prominent player in the semiconductor industry, has introduced its groundbreaking HBM3E memory, setting a new benchmark for AI applications. This innovation further solidifies the company’s dominance in the ultra-high-performance memory sector. With sample distribution underway for performance verification, mass production is scheduled to commence in the first half of 2024.

Unleashing Unprecedented Data Processing Speeds

HBM, or High Bandwidth Memory, involves stacking multiple DRAM chips vertically to significantly enhance data processing speeds. The journey of HBM DRAM has progressed from its initial iteration to the latest fifth-generation HBM3E, an evolution that demonstrates the company’s commitment to pushing technological boundaries. HBM3E is a refined version of its predecessor, HBM3.

SK Hynix expressed its pride in being the exclusive manufacturer of HBM3 and highlighted that the development of HBM3E showcases their expertise and dedication to spearheading the AI memory market. The company is geared up for mass production of this cutting-edge memory by the first half of the upcoming year.

Astounding Speed and Cutting-Edge Features

The standout feature of HBM3E is its awe-inspiring data processing speed, reaching an astounding 1.15 terabytes per second. To put this into perspective, this speed allows it to handle a remarkable 230 full high-definition movies, each with a size of 5 gigabytes, in just a single second.

Beyond its sheer speed, HBM3E incorporates Advanced MR-MUF technology, which enhances heat dissipation by a substantial 10% compared to its predecessor. Moreover, HBM3E is designed with backward compatibility, enabling seamless integration into existing HBM3-based systems without necessitating any design modifications.

Fostering Collaborative Synergy

The long-standing collaboration between NVIDIA and SK Hynix augments the potential of HBM3E. Ian Buck, VP of NVIDIA’s Hyperscale and HPC Division, expressed his excitement about the partnership’s trajectory, emphasizing the transformative impact of HBM3E on AI computing.

Competition and Future Prospects

Samsung, another major contender in the semiconductor realm, is poised to initiate mass production of HBM chips tailored for AI applications in the latter half of 2023. This move positions Samsung in direct competition with SK Hynix. In the preceding year, SK Hynix commanded a 50% share of the HBM market, while Samsung held 40%, with Micron accounting for the remaining 10%. Notably, the HBM market constitutes merely 1% of the overall DRAM segment.

Elevating AI Performance

SK Hynix’s HBM3E DRAM memory stands as a testament to the company’s unwavering commitment to advancing technology. With its unparalleled data processing speeds and innovative features, HBM3E is set to redefine the landscape of AI applications, paving the way for enhanced performance and capabilities.
