Google has unveiled its latest core search product, the Search Generative Experience, which uses more AI in its answers to compete with Microsoft Corp’s OpenAI-powered Bing search. With this, Google aims to prove that it is not losing ground in the AI-powered search market.

This new search feature complements its existing AI chatbot, Bard, which is designed for creative collaboration, such as generating software code or writing a caption for a photo.

When to Use Google and When to Use Bard?

Google recommends using its traditional search engine for finding and seeking information, such as looking for something to purchase. Meanwhile, Bard is a chatbot that can hold human-like conversations and is intended for creative collaboration.

What are the Updates to Google Search?

The enhanced search, Search Generative Experience, looks and acts like the familiar Google search bar, but with a difference in the answers. If the new Google detects that generative AI can be used to answer a query, the top of the results page will show the AI-generated response, while the traditional links to the web remain below. For instance, a search for “weather San Francisco” will point a user to an eight-day forecast, while a query asking what outfit to wear in the city will prompt a lengthy response generated by AI.

Moreover, the new feature includes a conversational mode that remembers the user’s prior questions, making it easier to ask follow-ups. However, the conversational mode is not designed to be a chatbot with a personality; it is intended only to help hone search results.

Can Users Try the New Google Search and Bard?

The Search Generative Experience is not yet available to users, and U.S. consumers will gain access to it in the coming weeks through a waitlist. On the other hand, Bard is available in 180 countries and territories, with plans to support 40 languages.

The Bottom Line

Google’s Search Generative Experience is an excellent addition to the search engine’s AI capabilities. By embedding more AI in its answers, Google aims to provide more accurate and efficient search results.

While Bard is designed for creative collaboration, the new search feature is geared toward enhancing the search experience. Users will soon have the chance to try the new search feature via a waitlist, and Bard is available now in 180 countries and territories.
