India is on its way to becoming the world leader in mobile devices, says IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, as smartphone exports from India have increased to over $11 billion. The government has set a target of $300 billion in the 2025-26 period, with $120 billion coming from exports.
The country exported mobile phones worth Rs. 86,000 crores, and according to industry body ICEA, mobile phone exports from India have doubled to more than Rs. 90,000 crores during the fiscal years 2022 and 2023. Apple and Samsung are the major players in this market, with Apple accounting for 50% of the export of “made in India” iPhones worth $5.5 billion and Samsung responsible for about 40% of exports worth Rs. 36,000 crores.
India’s Mobile Phone Export Juggernaut Continues
India has been making significant strides in mobile device exports, and the latest announcement by IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is proof of that. With a goal of $300 billion in the 2025-26 period, the government is pushing to make India a world leader in the market for mobile devices.
Mobile phone exports from India increased by twofold to more than Rs. 90,000 crores, or approximately $11.12 billion, during the fiscal years 2022 and 2023, according to the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA). This marks a significant victory for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” initiative.
Apple and Samsung Rule the Roost
According to sources in the industry, Apple accounted for 50% of the export of “made in India” iPhones worth $5.5 billion, while Samsung is responsible for about 40% of exports worth Rs. 36,000 crores. These two tech giants are leading the charge in India’s mobile device market.
ICEA Director Pankaj Mohindroo said, “Without significant exports, no sector or economy can develop into a global powerhouse. The cell phone export juggernaut continues.” It’s expected that mobile phones will contribute more than $50 billion in exports between now and 2026.
The Future of India’s Mobile Device Industry
India’s mobile device industry is booming, and with the government’s ambitious goal of $300 billion in the 2025-26 period, the future looks bright. Mobile phone exports now make up 46% of all exports of electronic goods, and this number is expected to continue to rise.
According to Vaishnaw, “India is well on its way to becoming a world leader in the mobile device market and plays a major role in India’s electronic exports with the doubling of smartphone exports to over $11 billion. This is a significant victory for PM Modiji’s “Make in India” program.”
With Apple and Samsung leading the way, it will be interesting to see which other players emerge in this market. Regardless, India’s mobile device industry is certainly one to watch.
