In a move that highlights the growing global recognition of India’s digital prowess, Japan is currently considering joining India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) payment system and exploring avenues for collaboration in digital identity systems. The UPI payment system, which has gained traction worldwide, enables users to make instant, secure, and convenient transactions through mobile devices. Several nations, including Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates, have already embraced this transformative payment system, experiencing its numerous benefits firsthand.
Union Minister for IT and Telecom, Ashwini Vaishnaw, expressed gratitude towards Japan’s Digital Minister for recognizing and embracing Prime Minister Modi’s visionary Digital India initiative. The Digital India vision has democratized digital technology and expanded its reach, making it accessible to a wide range of users across the country. This inclusivity and empowerment through technology have garnered attention and admiration on the global stage, evident in forums like the G20, SCO, and G7.
During the G7 Digital Ministers’ meeting, Japan and India actively engaged in discussions to strengthen digital cooperation. The Japanese Digital Minister, Kono Taro, revealed that Japan is seriously contemplating joining India’s UPI payment system. This strategic collaboration would enable Japan to tap into the success and efficiency of India’s digital payments ecosystem, enhancing its own digital landscape.
Furthermore, the two nations are exploring opportunities for mutual recognition of digital identities. By aligning their digital identity systems, Japan and India aim to increase interoperability and facilitate smoother transactions between their respective digital platforms. India has witnessed remarkable growth in digital payments, with UPI, debit and credit cards, and prepaid payment instruments processing a staggering 87.92 billion transactions worth Rs. 149.5 trillion in 2022. UPI payments, including Person-to-Merchant (P2M) and Person-to-Person (P2P) transactions, have emerged as the preferred modes of payment, capturing 40% and 44% of the transaction volume, respectively. The UPI system’s success has significantly contributed to India’s digital economy, with its market share in digital payments reaching 84%.
