In a groundbreaking move aimed at transforming emergency healthcare, Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals Kolkata has unveiled India’s first 5G-connected ambulance. This pioneering initiative showcases Apollo’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology to enhance patient care and improve outcomes in critical situations.

The 5G-connected ambulance stands at the forefront of medical innovation, featuring an array of state-of-the-art equipment, patient monitoring applications, and telemetry devices. These cutting-edge technologies seamlessly transmit vital health data in real time to the hospital, ensuring prompt and accurate medical intervention. Powered by HealthNet Global Limited’s advanced technology platform, the ambulance also incorporates onboard cameras connected to a lightning-fast and low-latency fifth-generation network.

At the heart of the 5G-connected ambulance is the ability to transmit a patient’s vital signs in real time, revolutionizing the way medical professionals respond to emergencies. This capability allows doctors to make rapid and informed decisions, providing valuable guidance to paramedics on the move. The low latency camera feed enables instant collaboration between ambulance staff and emergency room specialists equipped with advanced medical technologies, facilitating seamless coordination and ensuring efficient patient management. Furthermore, the ambulance’s GPS tracking system ensures optimal response times by dispatching the nearest available ambulance to critical situations, thereby minimizing potential delays in reaching patients.

The development of 5G-connected ambulances in India has been driven by strategic partnerships between key industry players. Bharti Airtel, in collaboration with technology leader Cisco and Apollo Hospitals, demonstrated the immense potential of this innovative healthcare solution in Bengaluru. Similarly, Reliance Jio partnered with Medulance, a prominent emergency medical services provider, to launch a similar service, thereby expanding access to advanced emergency care across the country.

K Hari Prasad, President-Hospitals Division at Apollo Hospitals Enterprises Limited, emphasized the profound impact of 5G-connected ambulances on critical care, stating, “The introduction of 5G-connected ambulances leverages technological advancements to provide immediate access to critical care for the seriously ill and injured. This groundbreaking initiative serves as an important tool in saving precious lives, as it enables advanced care from the moment the patient is reached until they receive treatment in the Emergency Room.”

Surinder Singh Bhatia, Director of Medical Service at Apollo Hospitals Kolkata, highlighted the significance of reducing transportation time in emergency cases, underscoring the potential life-saving impact of 5G-connected ambulances. He explained, “Studies have shown that longer journeys to the hospital increase the risk of mortality, with each 10-km increase associated with around a 1% absolute increase in mortality. With the 5G-connected ambulance, we bring the hospital to the patient, enabling early management and intervention during pre-hospital care.”
