OPPO is reportedly working on a rollable phone design that may come with a front camera sensor and expand in both directions. Patent images of the device have been leaked, giving a glimpse of what to expect from the Chinese giant. Here’s what we know so far.

OPPO Rollable Phone Design

The patent images reveal a candy bar-like design with a flat front and square edges. The rear camera module and LED flash are visible on the back, while the power and volume buttons are on the right spine. The Sort C port and speaker grilles can be found at the base. Notably, the front camera sensor is not visible, suggesting that it could be set inside the screen.

In-Display Front Camera Sensor

According to the patent listing, the OPPO rollable phone may feature an in-screen camera sensor. This could mean that the phone may have a completely bezel-less display without any visible camera punch-holes or notches. However, it remains to be seen how well the camera will perform in this new design.

Rollable Phone Expansion

The rollable phone design may allow the device to expand in either direction. While it’s possible that the phone may only expand from one side, there is a possibility that the screen will expand in two directions. The screen will likely expand when a specific task or touchpoint is activated. This feature could provide more flexibility to users who may want a larger screen without having to carry a tablet.

Patent Stage

It’s important to note that the OPPO rollable phone design is still in the patent stage, and it remains to be seen whether the company will release a commercial phone with the same design. However, the fact that the patent has been approved by China’s National Intellectual Property Administration suggests that OPPO is indeed exploring this new form factor.

Final Thoughts

OPPO’s rollable phone design with an in-display front camera sensor and flexible screen could be a game-changer in the smartphone industry. However, it remains to be seen how well the phone will perform in real-world conditions and whether it will be a hit with consumers. For now, we can only wait and see if OPPO will release this innovative design in the future.
