WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging apps globally, is making strides to address one of its users’ long-standing complaints: the compression of shared photos and videos. While WhatsApp had previously improved the situation by allowing users to share media files in HD quality, it remained a limitation for higher-resolution content.

However, the company is now beta testing a new feature that could potentially revolutionize media sharing on the platform, allowing users to share photos and videos in their original, uncompressed quality.

Streamlined Media Sharing:

The beta version in which this feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.19.3. Although the feature still technically shares high-resolution media files as documents, it simplifies the process significantly, making it faster and more user-friendly.

Intuitive Document Picker:

The new feature introduces a notable change to the document picker interface. When users select the “Document” option from the list of file-sharing choices, a new option called “Choose from gallery” appears. This option is described as a means to share photos and videos in their original quality.

User-Friendly Enhancement:

WhatsApp users have been sharing media files as documents for some time to avoid the platform’s file compression. The key distinction with this new feature is that WhatsApp is now integrating this option directly into the app, streamlining the process and making it easier for users to browse their media files, which previously required navigating through various files and folders.

Trade-Offs:

While the ability to share original quality media is a significant improvement, it’s worth noting that sharing them as documents lacks the preview functionality seen with regular media sharing. Users will need to download and open the file to view its contents.

Release Uncertainty:

The release date for this feature to the general public remains uncertain, but given WhatsApp’s history of beta testing and rapid feature deployment, users can anticipate its arrival sooner rather than later.

WhatsApp’s Ongoing Improvements:

WhatsApp has been actively working on various updates and improvements, such as a revamped user interface that includes changes to the status bar color and chat filters. Additionally, WhatsApp recently launched a native app for Mac users, introducing features like file drag-and-drop support and group calling.

All group video and audio calls on the app benefit from end-to-end encryption. Currently, the Mac version of WhatsApp is available on the WhatsApp website and will soon be added to the Apple App Store.

A User-Centric Approach:

WhatsApp’s commitment to enhancing the user experience and expanding its feature set demonstrates the company’s dedication to remaining a leading player in the messaging app landscape.
