Channels on WhatsApp allow administrators to broadcast messages to their followers with a single tap. Users have the option to choose which channels they want to follow and can easily search for them using a searchable directory. However, it’s important to note that Channels are not end-to-end encrypted by default.

In an effort to compete with Telegram and enhance its feature set, WhatsApp has officially announced the launch of Channels. This feature enables individuals and organizations to share information with their followers and allows users to stay updated on the latest developments from the people, teams, and organizations they are interested in. Although the feature has been in beta testing on Android and iOS since February, it is now ready for a wider audience.

What are WhatsApp Channels?

WhatsApp describes Channels as a simple, reliable, and private way to receive important updates from individuals and organizations. Currently available in Colombia and Singapore, WhatsApp is partnering with leading global voices and select organizations. The company plans to expand its Channels to other countries in the near future.

At the moment, not everyone can create a WhatsApp Channel, as it is a privilege granted by WhatsApp to selected users. However, this restriction will be lifted in the coming months. This cautious approach aims to prevent misuse of the feature and the spread of misinformation.

Channel admins have the ability to connect with their followers by sending texts, photos, videos, stickers, and polls. To maintain privacy, the profile photos and mobile numbers of both admins and followers will remain hidden from each other. WhatsApp retains channel history on its servers for up to 30 days. Admins also have the option to block screenshots and forwarding of messages within the channel.

Admins can choose who can follow their channel, but it’s important to note that Channels are not end-to-end encrypted by default. WhatsApp believes that the primary purpose of a channel is to reach a wider audience. However, the WhatsApp team is considering the possibility of introducing encryption for channels in the future.

From the perspective of followers, they have the freedom to choose which channels to follow. They can search for channels using a searchable directory, but only those set to public will be visible. Users can join a channel by using the invite link. Since channels operate as one-way broadcasts, followers cannot send messages to the channel.

WhatsApp is also introducing a new tab called “Updates,” which consolidates both Status and Channels. This dedicated tab provides users with a single place to check status updates and channel updates. The Updates tab will be located alongside the existing tabs for Chats, Calls, and Communities.

In other news, WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow users to share high-definition (HD) quality images with others. This will eliminate the need for workarounds such as sharing images as documents in order to preserve their original quality.
