In a move set to reshape the landscape of internet connectivity, Airtel-backed OneWeb is gearing up to launch its satellite internet services from September onwards. This significant development is poised to introduce a new era of global internet access and could potentially pose a formidable challenge to existing players like Starlink.

Airtel’s Foray into Satellite Internet Services

Airtel, a prominent player in the telecommunications sector, has been actively seeking opportunities to expand its business horizons. With an eye on diversification and innovation, the company has invested in OneWeb, a satellite service provider that holds the promise of delivering internet access to even the most remote corners of the world.

OneWeb’s mission aligns well with Airtel’s vision to bridge digital gaps and enhance connectivity. By holding a majority stake in OneWeb, Airtel is positioning itself to tap into the immense potential of satellite-based internet services.

Revolutionary Satellite Internet Service

The impending launch of OneWeb’s satellite internet service is expected to bring a paradigm shift in global connectivity. Unlike traditional terrestrial networks that rely on extensive infrastructure, satellite-based internet services leverage Earth orbit satellites to beam down internet access to ground stations below.

OneWeb’s approach bears resemblance to the Starlink project by SpaceX, albeit on a smaller scale. With a constellation of 542 satellites already in place, OneWeb aims to provide seamless internet coverage across various regions, enabling users to access the digital world even in areas where terrestrial infrastructure is lacking.

Airtel’s Competition with Starlink

While Starlink currently holds a significant lead in the satellite internet market with its constellation of 4,487 satellites, Airtel-backed OneWeb is catching up rapidly. With its determination to offer competitive satellite internet services, OneWeb could emerge as a strong challenger to Starlink’s dominance.

Akhil Gupta’s Vision for Satellite Communication

Akhil Gupta, the Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, expressed the need to propel satellite communication forward. He affirmed that Airtel’s OneWeb is poised to launch its satellite internet services in the coming month. Although specific deployment details weren’t disclosed, the announcement reflects Airtel’s commitment to driving innovation in the connectivity landscape.

Implications for Global Connectivity

OneWeb’s technology requires users to install a receiver antenna on the ground, akin to direct-to-home (DTH) setups. This means that internet connectivity can be achieved in remote areas without the need for cumbersome underground cables typical of broadband networks.

While there’s buzz about bringing satellite connectivity to mobile phones, current efforts are focused on utilizing satellite signals for SOS alerts rather than providing comprehensive internet access.

Regional Expansion and Priorities

Currently, OneWeb’s satellite coverage is concentrated in the Arctic region, including areas like the UK, Greenland, Alaska, and parts of Canada. Expansion plans include extending coverage to the US and Australia before gradually moving into other markets such as the Middle East and South Asia.

Considering Airtel’s priorities, it’s unlikely that OneWeb’s satellite internet services will be introduced in India anytime soon. Airtel’s primary focus in India remains on expanding its Airtel Xtream fibre connections and deploying 5G connectivity across various regions.

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology and connectivity, Airtel’s partnership with OneWeb signals a shift towards harnessing the potential of satellite-based internet services. As the launch date approaches, the industry and consumers alike are eagerly anticipating the transformative impact that OneWeb’s satellite internet services could bring to global connectivity.
