The Department of Telecom (DoT) has introduced the Sanchar Saathi portal, which allows users to block and track their lost or stolen mobile phones anywhere in India. Additionally, the portal assists users in verifying the authenticity of second-hand mobile phones before purchasing them.
Sanchar Saathi Portal for Enhanced Mobile Security
On Tuesday, the Union telecom minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the launch of the Sanchar Saathi portal, enabling individuals to effectively manage their lost or stolen mobile phones. Through this portal, users can block and track their devices, as well as verify the legitimacy of pre-owned phones before making a purchase.
Key Features of the Sanchar Saathi Portal
Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the first leg of the Sanchar Saathi portal, known as the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR). In the unfortunate event of losing a mobile phone, users can visit the portal and complete the necessary identity verification process. The portal will then collaborate with law enforcement agencies and telecom service providers to promptly block the lost device. This initiative aims to enhance mobile security across the country.
Combatting Fraudulent Activities
Regarding fraudulent activities through WhatsApp calls, the government has engaged with the app’s owner, Meta, to deactivate services associated with mobile phone numbers involved in such activities. The government has also cooperated with other Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms to deregister users identified as fraudsters. As a result, 3.6 million mobile connections have been disconnected due to fraud, with corresponding WhatsApp accounts being blocked.
Genuineness Verification and TAFCOP Facility
The Sanchar Saathi portal includes the “Know Your Mobile” feature, enabling users to authenticate second-hand mobile phones before purchasing them. This verification process ensures that consumers can confidently assess the authenticity of pre-owned devices. Additionally, the portal offers the TAFCOP facility, which allows users to check if any mobile numbers are associated with their name without their knowledge or permission.
Role of C-DoT and IMEI Numbers
C-DoT, the technology development arm under the Department of Telecom, has developed the Sanchar Saathi facilities. These features enable the detection of cloned mobile phones across all telecom networks. To prevent the entry of unauthorized mobile phones into their networks, mobile operators have access to a list of approved International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers.
The CEIR system helps track lost or stolen mobile phones by utilizing the IMEI number and the associated mobile number. This technology has already been successfully piloted in several telecom circles, leading to the recovery and return of 2,500 lost mobile phones to their owners by the Karnataka Police.
Curbing Mobile Phone Smuggling
The Sanchar Saathi system not only enhances mobile security but also aids in curbing the smuggling of phones. With the implementation of this system, the use of stolen mobile phones becomes futile. While Apple already has a tracking system in place for its devices, the Sanchar Saathi portal addresses major issues related to tracking lost or stolen Android mobile phones.
In conclusion, the introduction of the Sanchar Saathi portal by the DoT provides users with a robust platform to block, track, and verify mobile phones in India. This initiative contributes to the overall security and protection of mobile devices, empowering users and discouraging fraudulent activities.
