Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has emerged as the leader of a consortium that has received an advance purchase order worth over Rs. 15,000 crores from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the state-run telecommunications company. The order is for the deployment of a fourth-generation mobile (4G) network across India.

4G Expansion Amidst 5G Upgrades by Competitors

The timing of this order is significant as Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are currently expanding their infrastructure for 5G technology throughout the country. While these companies focus on the future, BSNL has decided to enhance its services by rolling out a 4G network.

BSNL’s 4G Services in Pilot Mode

BSNL had already launched its 4G services in pilot mode on April 22, initially in parts of Punjab. This was a preparatory step toward a broader nationwide rollout of 4G services. The company has commenced live testing of its 4G network using 135 tower sites and an indigenous telecom stack.

Order for Upgradation of IP-MPLS Network

Tejas Networks Limited, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, recently received an order worth Rs. 696 crore from BSNL. This order is for the upgradation of BSNL’s all-India IP-MPLS-based Access and Aggregation Network (MAAN). Tejas Networks, renowned for its wireless networking products, will supply, install, and commission over 13,000 next-generation access and aggregation routers as part of the contract.

Deployment and Completion Timeline

According to an exchange filing made by Tejas Networks, the initial supplies and deployment of the routers are expected to be completed within the next 18 months. This ambitious timeline demonstrates the commitment of TCS and Tejas Networks to expedite the deployment of BSNL’s 4G network.

TCS and Tejas Networks’ Stock Performance

The stock of TCS experienced a 0.70 percent increase, trading at Rs. 3,245.05 apiece during Monday’s morning trade. Similarly, Tejas Networks’ shares witnessed a 0.97 percent increase, trading at Rs. 648.20 apiece on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) during Monday’s morning trade.

The partnership between TCS and Tejas Networks in the deployment of BSNL’s 4G network showcases their capabilities in delivering advanced telecommunications solutions. This collaboration is expected to play a crucial role in expanding connectivity and improving internet access for millions of people across India.
