Apple’s Next-Generation iPhone SE, rumored to have a custom 5G modem, could be released in 2025, according to analyst Jeff Pu’s research note for Haitong International Securities. Apple is reportedly collaborating with TSMC to develop a bespoke 5G modem for the rumored fourth-generation iPhone SE, featuring a 6.1-inch OLED screen and a 4nm technology-based custom modem.
This news comes after analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that Apple would begin mass production of the device in the first half of 2024. The CEO of Qualcomm also suggested a possible 2024 release date. However, Pu now believes that the launch has been moved to 2025.
The iPhone SE currently in its third generation was last updated by Apple in March 2022. It features a home button-based design, a 4.7-inch IPS display, and Touch ID biometric authentication instead of Face ID. The device is powered by the A15 Bionic and Qualcomm’s custom Snapdragon X57 chip for sub-6GHz 5G.
Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the 2025 model may feature Face ID support and a design similar to that of the iPhone 14. In 2019, Apple reduced its reliance on Qualcomm by acquiring most of Intel’s smartphone modem units for use in its own iPhone modem. However, it remains to be seen whether Apple’s modem will match or exceed Qualcomm’s in terms of 5G speed or power efficiency.
The rumored iPhone SE with a bespoke 5G modem would provide a boost to Apple’s mid-range smartphone lineup, which has been missing 5G connectivity so far. With the increased adoption of 5G networks worldwide, it is essential for Apple to offer 5G support across its product line to stay competitive.
Apple is known for its strict quality control and attention to detail in all aspects of its products, and the custom-made 5G modem is expected to be no exception. As Apple continues to innovate and develop cutting-edge technology, customers can look forward to more exciting advancements in the years to come.
