Truecaller, the popular caller identification app, will soon roll out a feature that will allow users to spot potential spam calls over messaging apps, including WhatsApp. The feature, which is currently in beta, will be launched globally later this month, according to Truecaller’s CEO Alan Mamedi.
This move is aimed at addressing the rise of telemarketing and scam calls, especially in countries like India, where users receive an average of 17 spam calls per month, as per a 2021 report by Truecaller.
AI Filters to Block Telemarketing Calls
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India directed carriers like Jio and Airtel to start blocking telemarketing calls over their networks using AI filters in February. Truecaller is currently in talks with telecom operators to implement a similar solution.
Rising User Reports on Spam Calls Over WhatsApp
Mamedi noted a spike in user reports from India on spam calls over WhatsApp in the last two weeks, with telemarketers switching to internet calling. WhatsApp is the most widely used messaging platform in India, and it uses spam detection technology to identify and take action against accounts engaging in abnormal behavior, allowing users to report and block problematic accounts.
