OnePlus, a Chinese smartphone manufacturer has announced that it will be extending security updates for some of its popular devices. This decision is a welcome move for OnePlus users who may have been concerned about the lifespan of their devices. In this article, we will take a closer look at the announcement and what it means for OnePlus users.

Android updates for OnePlus smartphones

According to the report, OnePlus’ president for the Chinese market, Li Jie, has stated that the OnePlus 11 5G, OnePlus Ace 2, and OnePlus Ace 2V will receive four major Android updates and five years of security patches, making the OnePlus 11 5G eligible for Android 17.

According to the report, Jie estimated that the cost of maintaining the company’s smartphones for more than four years would exceed CNY 100 million, or approximately Rs 119 crore. It should be noted that the data was provided by the Chinese subsidiary of OnePlus. As a result, we are still awaiting official confirmation from OnePlus representatives worldwide.

Along with Samsung and Google, this would provide the company with the longest support for its flagship models.

Android updates on Samsung, and Google phones

The South Korean technology behemoth Samsung said last year that the Samsung Galaxy A53 midrange device will come with the same software support and that its flagship handsets would receive four years of Android OS upgrades. Google promises three substantial Android OS updates over the course of five years and five years of security patches for Pixel flagship smartphones. Also, it is said that the Google Pixel 6a will receive security upgrades for five years.

The decision to extend security updates is crucial for users as it provides them with protection against potential security threats. Cybersecurity threats are becoming more sophisticated, and having the latest security updates can prevent potential attacks and data breaches.

Moreover, the announcement also shows OnePlus’ commitment to sustainability. By extending the lifespan of its devices, OnePlus is reducing the number of devices that end up in landfills. This move is not only good for the environment but also good for the users’ wallets as they will not have to upgrade their devices as frequently.

In conclusion, the announcement that OnePlus will be extending security updates for some of its popular devices is significant. It shows the company’s commitment to providing its customers with a longer lifespan for their devices, protection against potential security threats, and sustainability. This move is not only beneficial for the users but also aligns with Google’s Android Enterprise Recommended program. If you own a OnePlus device that is included in this announcement, you can rest assured that you will receive security updates for the next five years.
