Apple is reportedly making a notable shift in its display strategy for the non-Pro models in the upcoming iPhone 17 series. According to a leak from Chinese tipster Fixed Focal Digital on Weibo, the iPhone 17 and the new iPhone 17 Air are expected to feature 120Hz displays. However, unlike the Pro models, these screens won’t include Apple’s proprietary ProMotion technology.
Understanding ProMotion vs. Standard 120Hz
ProMotion is Apple’s adaptive refresh rate technology that dynamically adjusts the display refresh rate based on the on-screen content. Found in current Pro iPhones, ProMotion supports a refresh rate range between 1Hz to 120Hz thanks to LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) display panels. This allows for smoother animations, reduced power consumption, and support for features like Always-on Display (AoD).
In contrast, the leaked information suggests that the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will use “ordinary” 120Hz displays, which are likely to be of the LTPS (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) variety. These displays could only switch between fixed steps like 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz, lacking the seamless, power-efficient transitions of ProMotion.
Why This Matters
This would be the first time Apple introduces a 120Hz refresh rate to its non-Pro iPhone lineup, marking a step forward for users who want a smoother screen experience without paying a premium. However, without ProMotion, users may not enjoy the same battery efficiency or fluidity seen on the Pro models. Additionally, the lack of LTPO technology could mean that features like AoD remain exclusive to the Pro lineup.
Will Always-on Display Come to Non-Pro Models?
The Always-on Display, introduced with Pro iPhones, relies heavily on ProMotion and LTPO for power efficiency. While AoD technically can function on a fixed refresh rate, Apple may decide to keep this feature exclusive to its Pro devices to maintain differentiation in the lineup.
Should You Wait for iPhone 17 or iPhone 17 Air?
If you’re considering a new iPhone and desire smoother visuals for gaming, scrolling, and overall UI experience, the 120Hz panel in the iPhone 17 or 17 Air could be worth the wait. However, if you prioritize battery life and advanced display features like ProMotion and AoD, the Pro models might still offer a better experience.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 series at its annual fall event, likely in September 2025. Stay tuned for more details as leaks continue to emerge.
