Apple appears set to continue its trend of refining the iPhone lineup, and the upcoming iPhone 17 is expected to see notable upgrades to its display. According to fresh leaks from a credible Chinese tipster, the standard iPhone 17 model will feature a larger screen size, matching the iPhone 16 Pro’s 6.3-inch panel. If accurate, this change will be the first time Apple has significantly increased the base iPhone’s display size in years, along with introducing a 120Hz LTPO OLED display to the non-Pro lineup for the first time.

iPhone 17 Display Size Leaked

According to information shared by Digital Chat Station on China’s Weibo platform, the iPhone 17 will sport a 6.3-inch screen, which is a bump from the 6.1-inch panel seen on current non-Pro iPhones. The iPhone 16 Pro already features this screen size, suggesting Apple may now be standardizing display sizes across more models.

This leak supports earlier reports that hinted at a similar screen expansion. The move aligns with Apple’s ongoing strategy of bringing more premium features to its non-Pro iPhones over time.

Indirect Confirmation from Spigen

Interestingly, this rumor got an unexpected boost earlier this week when Spigen’s tempered glass listing for the iPhone 16 Pro briefly mentioned compatibility with the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, both featuring 6.3-inch displays. The listing, which appeared on Amazon India, has since been edited to remove the references—suggesting that the inclusion may have revealed premature information.

120Hz Refresh Rate Expected for Standard Models

A major highlight of the iPhone 17 leak is the expected introduction of 120Hz refresh rate displays on non-Pro iPhones for the first time. The LTPO OLED technology—already used in Pro models—will now reportedly feature on the base iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Air, a new model rumored to launch in 2025.

Current base iPhones, including the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, still use standard 60Hz panels, which puts Apple behind Android rivals in display smoothness. This upgrade would finally bring ProMotion-like experience to a broader range of users.

Some Pro Features May Remain Exclusive

Despite the 120Hz upgrade, not all Pro features may make the cut. Apple is expected to reserve Always-On Display and the 1Hz-120Hz adaptive refresh rate functionality for its iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models. These features rely on the dynamic refresh capabilities of ProMotion displays and have been tightly linked with Apple’s premium tiers.

Adoption of M14 OLED Panels Across the Lineup

According to older supply chain reports, Apple plans to use Samsung’s latest M14 OLED panels on all four iPhone 17 models. These panels offer higher efficiency, better brightness, and longer lifespan, and were previously exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. If this materializes, display quality across the entire iPhone 17 series could see a major leap.

Conclusion

If the leaks hold true, the iPhone 17 will mark a pivotal evolution for Apple’s base models, both in terms of screen size and technology. The jump to a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate would significantly improve the user experience—making the standard iPhone more appealing to a wider audience. With launch expected later in 2025, more official details are likely to surface in the coming months.

Stay tuned as we track more developments on the iPhone 17 series, its potential Air variant, and what other surprises Apple may have in store.
