The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is making significant advancements in its space exploration programs. The organization has announced the development of two new launchpads to support its growing mission frequency. Additionally, ISRO has confirmed the Chandrayaan-4 mission, set for launch in 2028, which will focus on retrieving lunar samples a milestone that will mark India’s first sample return mission from the Moon.

ISRO to Establish Two New Launchpads

To accommodate the increasing number of space missions, ISRO is set to build two additional launchpads. One will be located in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, while the second will be constructed in Kulasekarapattinam, Tamil Nadu. These launch sites are expected to become operational within the next two years, significantly improving ISRO’s capability to conduct frequent launches, including those for both domestic and international space programs.

Chandrayaan-4: Aiming for Lunar Sample Return in 2028

The upcoming Chandrayaan-4 mission is set to be one of ISRO’s most ambitious lunar exploration projects. Unlike its predecessor, Chandrayaan-3, which had a mass of 4,000 kg, Chandrayaan-4 will carry a significantly larger payload of 9,200 kg.

Key Features of Chandrayaan-4:

Lunar Sample Return: The mission will attempt to land on the Moon, collect samples, and return them to Earth.

Two-Module Docking System: It will feature two interconnected modules that will dock in space before landing on the Moon.

Advancing India’s Lunar Science: The samples collected will be analyzed to gain deeper insights into the Moon’s composition and history.

This mission will place India among an elite group of nations that have successfully returned lunar samples to Earth, such as the United States, China, and the Soviet Union.

International Collaborations and Upcoming Missions

ISRO continues to expand its global collaborations. One key project in this area is the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite, a joint venture between India and the United States.

Key Aspects of NISAR:

It is an Earth observation satellite designed to study environmental changes.

It will be launched using a GSLV Mark II rocket.

The satellite will provide critical data for climate monitoring, disaster management, and environmental research.

Additionally, ISRO is working on a G-20 climate-focused satellite, with 40% of its payload being developed domestically. This initiative will further India’s contribution to global climate research efforts.

ISRO’s Achievements in Satellite Launches

Over the past decade, ISRO has successfully launched 433 satellites for 34 countries, strengthening India’s position in the global space industry. According to reports, 90% of these launches have taken place in the last 10 years, reflecting ISRO’s rapid growth in satellite deployment.

Notable Achievements:

Cost-effective satellite launches that attract international clients.

Consistent success with PSLV and GSLV missions.

Advancement in space technology for commercial and scientific applications.

Promoting Gender Inclusivity in Space Research

ISRO has also emphasized its commitment to gender inclusivity, ensuring that women play a crucial role in its missions. Women scientists have contributed significantly to major projects, including:

Chandrayaan missions

Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan)

This reflects ISRO’s dedication to fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce, empowering talent regardless of gender.

Future Prospects and Scientific Advancements

ISRO’s long-term vision includes making space research more cost-effective and beneficial for common citizens. The organization is also focusing on:

Releasing data from its solar studies for global scientific research.

Enhancing India’s leadership in space technology.

Expanding its international partnerships in space exploration.

Conclusion

With the construction of two new launchpads, the ambitious Chandrayaan-4 mission, and strategic global collaborations, ISRO is poised to reinforce India’s status as a leading spacefaring nation. As India continues its journey toward becoming a space superpower, these developments mark a significant step forward in scientific exploration and technological advancements.
