Indian electric scooter manufacturer, Ather Energy, has trademarked the name “Ather 450S” and “450S”, raising speculation that a new affordable electric scooter could be in the works.
This move comes after the successful launch of the Ather 450 Plus and Ather 450X premium electric scooters, which compete in the premium electric scooter segment in India against the likes of Ola S1 Pro, Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube, and Vida V1.
What is the Ather 450S?
A leaked document suggests that Ather Energy could be working on a new affordable electric scooter, the Ather 450S, to cater to the lower end of the electric scooter market in India. This product could be positioned as a more affordable alternative to the existing Ather 450X with the Pro Pack.
Ather Energy could launch the Ather 450S as a new derivative of the Ather 450X in a more affordable package that could include a smaller battery pack, fewer software features, and lesser new-age gadgetry.
Renaming the Ather 450X?
Alternatively, Ather Energy might also use the newly trademarked nomenclature to rename the current base Ather 450X without the Pro Pack, simplifying its product line’s naming scheme for customers. This new offering could include faster charging support and a portable charger, with customers having the option to upgrade to the higher-spec Ather 450X with the Pro Pack to avail of advanced software features.
The Future of Affordable Electric Scooters
As the FAME subsidy implementation becomes tighter and state subsidies get depleted, multiple OEMs are rolling out affordable electric two-wheeler offerings to maintain strong sales figures.
Ather Energy could be among the first Indian manufacturers to introduce an affordable electric scooter with the Ather 450S, a move that could further expand its market reach and appeal to budget-conscious customers.
