BMW has unveiled a new strategy for electric vehicles (EVs) in China, aimed at capturing a larger share of the world’s largest EV market. The German automaker plans to launch a series of China-specific EV models based on its Neue Klasse platform. This move is part of BMW’s efforts to stay competitive in a market where local brands and tech giants like Tesla are gaining traction.
China-Specific EVs
BMW CEO Oliver Zipse announced the company’s plans at the World New Energy Vehicle Congress in Munich. He revealed that BMW Design Shanghai is already working on special designs and features for China-specific models of the Neue Klasse. This approach acknowledges the unique preferences and needs of Chinese consumers.
Production in China
BMW intends to begin manufacturing Neue Klasse vehicles in China by 2026. While it’s unclear whether the market-exclusive versions will be the first to go on sale, local production will help the company reduce costs and better serve the Chinese market.
Neue Klasse Concept
At the Munich Motor Show, BMW showcased a concept for the first Neue Klasse model. The concept features a fresh design language with chiseled styling reminiscent of BMW’s 1960s models. Inside, the cabin boasts a head-up display that spans the entire windshield and a distinctive parallelogram-shaped screen on the dashboard.
Technical Details and Range
While full technical details are not yet available, BMW has hinted at an impressive driving range of up to 621 miles for the Neue Klasse models. The company can adjust the nickel and cobalt content in the battery cells to meet the vehicle’s requirements. The batteries can support high-speed charging of up to 270 kilowatts.
Production Timeline and Models
Production of Neue Klasse vehicles will commence in Hungary in 2025 and expand to Germany in 2026. Mexico will join the production network in 2027. The lineup will start with a sedan model, followed by an electric SUV. BMW plans to introduce six models based on the Neue Klasse platform by 2027, catering to various segments of the EV market.
Hydrogen-Fuel-Cell Technology
In addition to EVs, BMW is also exploring hydrogen-fuel-cell technology for the Neue Klasse platform, primarily for larger vehicles. This demonstrates the automaker’s commitment to offering a range of sustainable mobility solutions to meet evolving market demands.
BMW’s strategic shift towards China-specific EVs and its investment in advanced technologies underscore the importance of the Chinese market in the global transition to electric mobility.
