India is set to mark a major milestone in its technological journey as the country’s first indigenously developed semiconductor chip is expected to enter production by 2025. This announcement was made by Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, during the Global Investors Summit 2025 in Bhopal. The move is part of India’s larger push to become self-reliant in semiconductor manufacturing and strengthen its position in the global electronics market.

Madhya Pradesh: A Rising Electronics Manufacturing Hub

Madhya Pradesh is witnessing rapid industrial growth, particularly in electronics manufacturing. Two dedicated electronics manufacturing clusters have been set up in Bhopal and Jabalpur, attracting investments and fostering technological advancements. Currently, 85 companies are actively engaged in electronics manufacturing in the state. Vaishnaw praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav for their efforts in boosting the sector.

 

To support this growth, the government has introduced the Future Skills Programme, aimed at training 20,000 engineers in semiconductor and advanced electronics technologies. This initiative is expected to create a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting industry demands.

 

India’s Electronics Manufacturing Boom

India’s electronics sector has grown tremendously in recent years, reaching a valuation of ₹10 lakh crore. Electronic exports have surged to ₹5 lakh crore, with mobile phones contributing ₹4 lakh crore. The remaining ₹1 lakh crore includes exports of laptops, servers, telecom equipment, and defence and medical electronics.

 

Vaishnaw highlighted that electronics has now become one of India’s top three export categories, showcasing the country’s growing presence in the global market.

 

Strengthening India’s Semiconductor Workforce

Recognizing the need for skilled professionals in the semiconductor industry, the government has launched a programme to train 85,000 engineers in semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. This initiative will help build a strong workforce to support India’s growing semiconductor ecosystem.
