In a bid to compete with streaming giants like Netflix and Disney+, Amazon is reportedly contemplating the introduction of an ad-supported tier for its popular streaming service, Prime Video. The company’s aim is to entice a larger user base by offering a more affordable option, mirroring the strategies employed by its competitors. With India known for its price sensitivity, an ad-supported plan could potentially find success in this market.

Exploring the Rumored Prime Video Ad-Supported Plan

According to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, sources familiar with Amazon’s plans have revealed that the company has been considering the introduction of an ad-supported plan for Prime Video. Although details regarding the pricing and functionality of the plan remain undisclosed, it is expected to offer a lower-cost alternative to the ad-free tiers currently available. This approach follows the model adopted by other streaming services, where users have the option to pay more for an ad-free viewing experience.

Amazon’s Advertising Growth and Excitement Among Advertisers

While Amazon has been focused on cost-cutting measures in various areas, its advertising business has experienced significant growth. The company reported $9.5 billion in advertising revenue for the first quarter, marking a 21% year-over-year increase. Currently, Amazon stands as the third-largest digital ad revenue earner in the United States, trailing behind Google and Meta. Advertisers are particularly enthusiastic about the possibility of an ad-supported Prime Video tier, recognizing the potential to reach a vast audience through premium movies and TV shows.

The Potential Success of the Prime Video Ad-Supported Plan in India

When the ad-supported plan eventually arrives in India, it holds promise for success in this price-sensitive market. Companies often release more affordable subscription plans tailored to the Indian market, and Amazon is likely to follow suit. For instance, Netflix offers a Basic plan priced at Rs 199 per month ($2.41) compared to $9.99 in the United States. Amazon already operates miniTV, a free ad-supported streaming service focused on locally produced shows, exclusively available in India. The addition of an ad-supported Prime Video plan at an even lower price point is likely to generate excitement among Indian users.

Current Prime Video plans in India range from Rs 299 per month to Rs 1,499 per year, with additional options like Prime Mobile and Prime Lite annual plans. If Amazon introduces a cheaper ad-supported plan, it has the potential to captivate Indian users who are eager for accessible entertainment options.
