WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform owned by Meta, has rolled out enhanced payment options for users in India. This move is part of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s plan to make business messaging a significant growth pillar for the company. With these new features, WhatsApp aims to encourage users to make purchases directly within the app.
Key highlights of WhatsApp’s expanded payment options in India:
UPI Apps and Cards: WhatsApp now allows users in India to make payments within the app using UPI (Unified Payments Interface) apps, debit cards, credit cards, and net banking. Users can add items to their cart and complete payments through any UPI app available in India, as well as with debit and credit cards. This feature simplifies the purchasing process and offers users a seamless shopping experience.
Partnership with Razorpay and PayU: To enable these payment options, WhatsApp has partnered with Razorpay and PayU, leading payment processing companies. These partnerships ensure secure and efficient payment processing directly within the app.
Expanded UPI Support: Users can now use popular UPI apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and others for making payments on WhatsApp. Previously, users were redirected to external apps for such transactions.
No User Cap for Business Transactions: While the number of WhatsApp Pay users in India is capped at 100 million, there is no such limit for users transacting with businesses on WhatsApp using the newly introduced payment methods. This offers more flexibility for businesses to engage with their customers through the platform.
Business Growth Focus: Meta aims to make business messaging a major driver of sales growth. The expansion of payment options within WhatsApp is expected to enhance the platform’s appeal to businesses and promote business-customer interactions.
Meta Verified Subscription Program: Meta has extended its Meta Verified subscription program to businesses worldwide. This program allows businesses to establish their authenticity with Meta, leading to benefits such as verified badges, enhanced account support, and protection against impersonation.
With over 500 million WhatsApp users in India, these new payment options are expected to facilitate more in-app transactions and boost e-commerce activities on the platform. Additionally, the inclusion of UPI apps and cards simplifies the payment process, making it easier for users to make purchases through WhatsApp.
