In a bold move that reflects its evolving software philosophy, Apple is reportedly preparing to overhaul its operating system naming convention starting next year. According to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple will adopt a year-based naming system for all of its platforms—starting with iOS 18, which is expected to be renamed iOS 26 in 2025. This change will align Apple’s software branding more closely with its future-forward product strategy and simplify its growing suite of operating systems.

What’s Changing?

Apple currently uses incremental version numbers—such as iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma (14)—but beginning in 2025, the company is expected to transition to a unified, year-based naming scheme. For example, the operating system launching in late 2025 will be branded as “26,” meaning iOS 18 will be marketed as iOS 26. This shift will also apply across Apple’s broader ecosystem, including:

iPadOS 26

macOS 26

watchOS 26

tvOS 26

visionOS 26

The intent is to eliminate inconsistencies caused by staggered launch cycles and provide a clearer, easier-to-follow system for users and developers alike.

Why the Name Change?

Mark Gurman explains that this shift brings Apple in line with industry trends. Tech giants like Samsung and Microsoft have used similar strategies—Samsung names its Galaxy phones after the release year, and Microsoft previously used years for Windows (e.g., Windows 95, Windows 98).

Apple’s new method resembles automotive branding, where models are often labeled with the next year’s number. For instance, software launching in late 2025 will be branded “26,” signaling its relevance for the following calendar year. Apple has also dabbled with this format in the past, as seen with iWork ’08 and iLife ’11.

Expected Features & Enhancements

Alongside the new naming convention, Apple is planning a major software redesign and feature upgrade across its platforms. Some of the expected innovations include:

iPad to Mimic Mac Functionality

iPadOS 26 will push the iPad closer to a Mac-like experience with improved multitasking, better file management, and enhanced keyboard support—making it more office-friendly.

Deeper AI Integration with Apple Intelligence

Apple will expand access to its AI framework, Apple Intelligence, allowing third-party developers to integrate advanced machine learning features into their apps.

Live Translation on Siri and AirPods

A new real-time translation feature will arrive, helping Siri and compatible AirPods offer seamless cross-language communication.

 Vision Pro Eye Control

The Vision Pro headset will gain new functionality, including eye-scrolling—allowing users to navigate interfaces just by looking.

Health and Battery Intelligence

iOS 26 and watchOS 26 will include AI-powered health monitoring tools, as well as smarter battery management to extend device lifespan.

New Tools for Multilingual Users and Creatives

A bi-directional Arabic-English keyboard and calligraphy-focused Apple Pencil tool are in development, enhancing language support and digital creativity.

Gaming App in Development

Apple is reportedly working on a dedicated gaming app, signaling a renewed focus on making Apple devices more gamer-friendly.

Unified Visual Experience Across Devices

Another notable aspect of the 2025 update is a visual refresh across the board, likely introducing a visionOS-inspired design language. This unified design will blur the lines between platforms and offer a more cohesive experience—whether you’re using a Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Vision Pro headset.

Launch Details: WWDC 2025

The new naming convention, along with the upcoming OS features, is expected to be officially announced at WWDC 2025. Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference kicks off on June 9, with the keynote scheduled for 10 AM PDT (10:30 PM IST). As usual, developers and enthusiasts around the world will be tuning in for what could be one of the most transformative software keynotes in Apple’s history.

Conclusion

Apple’s decision to rename iOS 18 to iOS 26 is more than a branding change—it’s a reflection of a broader shift in the company’s vision for its software ecosystem. By synchronizing naming across devices, integrating advanced AI features, and redesigning the user experience, Apple is setting the stage for a smarter, more connected future. All eyes are now on WWDC 2025, where the tech giant is expected to detail its bold new direction.
