Instagram is reportedly working on a new feature that could reshape how users engage with Reels. The platform is testing “locked Reels” — a fresh take on content privacy and engagement — that requires viewers to enter a secret code to unlock and watch the video.
What Are Locked Reels?
Locked Reels are short videos posted on Instagram that remain inaccessible until a specific secret code is entered. In a recent test shared via Instagram’s official Design account, viewers were prompted to enter a code based on a clue in the caption: “1st # in the caption.” The answer, in this case, was “#threads.”
This approach echoes previous Instagram features like the “Reveal” sticker in Stories, where content remains blurred until users interact, or “Frames,” a nostalgic feature launched during Coachella 2024 that made users shake their phones to reveal a photo.
How It Works
Creators upload a Reel and can choose to lock it behind a code. Viewers will only see a blurred screen with a prompt to enter the correct code. Once the code is entered, the Reel becomes visible.
The intention is to create curiosity and improve user interaction, encouraging viewers to engage more thoughtfully with captions and other post elements.
Why Instagram Is Testing This
Instagram has been ramping up its feature set, especially with TikTok under regulatory scrutiny in the US. The company is looking to capitalize on this uncertainty by launching unique, engaging tools.
Locked Reels could serve multiple purposes:
User engagement: Encourages viewers to pay closer attention and interact more with content.
Brand strategy: Enables exclusive product reveals, event teasers, and more creative campaigns.
Content control: Allows selective access to content for specific followers, fans, or friends.
Use Cases for Creators and Brands
The locked Reel feature opens up creative opportunities. Brands could tease new product launches, limit early access content to loyal customers, or run contests that require fans to “crack the code.” For creators, it adds a layer of mystery, making content feel more personal or exclusive.
For everyday users, this could become a playful way to share secret messages, private jokes, or surprises among friends.
Lockable Posts Also in Testing
Beyond Reels, Instagram is also said to be testing lockable regular posts. As per Social Media Today, this would allow targeted sharing — like offering exclusive discount codes to select users or region-specific updates — without broadcasting to a wider audience.
Still in the Testing Phase
As of now, there’s no official confirmation from Instagram about a public rollout. The feature is being tested internally, and no timeline has been shared for its availability. Whether it becomes a mainstream tool will depend on user feedback and how it performs during testing.
