The iPhone 16e, Apple’s latest entry-level smartphone, has undergone a rigorous durability test to assess its strength and build quality. Popular YouTuber JerryRigEverything conducted a series of tests, including scratch, fire, and bend tests, to evaluate the phone’s resilience. The results suggest that while the iPhone 16e may not have the premium materials of its Pro counterparts, it holds up well against physical stress.
iPhone 16e Durability Test Results
Scratch Test: Ceramic Shield Protection Holds Up
The scratch test follows the standard Mohs hardness scale. The iPhone 16e’s display starts showing faint scratches at level 6, with deeper marks appearing at level 7. However, thanks to Apple’s Ceramic Shield, the scratches are not as pronounced as those seen on other smartphones with traditional glass protection.
Moving on to the frame, the aluminium build is more prone to scratches compared to the titanium used in the Pro models. Despite this, the phone remains lightweight, likely due to the absence of MagSafe magnets. The camera lens cover, however, is highly scratch-resistant, offering solid protection to the 48MP rear camera.
Fire Test: OLED Screen Recovers Quickly
In the fire test, where the display is exposed to direct flame, the iPhone 16e’s 6.1-inch Pro XDR OLED panel withstands approximately 20 seconds before showing a temporary white spot. However, the screen quickly recovers, showing no dead pixels or permanent damage.
Bend Test: Impressive Structural Integrity
The iPhone 16e was subjected to a bend test, where pressure was applied from both the front and back. Despite significant force, the phone neither bent nor showed any signs of structural weakness. This suggests a solid build, comparable to the standard iPhone 16.
Repairability and Battery Removal: A Step Forward
Apple has made notable internal changes to improve repairability. Unlike previous models, which used pull-tab adhesives for the battery, the iPhone 16e introduces an electrically assisted battery removal process. By applying electricity for about a minute, the 4,005mAh battery easily detaches, thanks to an electrically debonded adhesive.
Additionally, a teardown of the device reveals that Apple has omitted sensor-shift stabilization from the camera module, possibly to keep costs down.
iPhone 16e Price and Availability in India
The iPhone 16e is now available in India, with pricing as follows:
128GB model – ₹59,900
256GB model – ₹69,900
512GB model – ₹89,900
The device is available in Black and White color options.
Final Verdict: A Sturdy Entry-Level iPhone
The durability test confirms that the iPhone 16e is built to last. While it may lack premium materials like titanium, its Ceramic Shield display, sturdy frame, and easy battery removal process make it a well-constructed device. Users looking for a reliable, repair-friendly iPhone with decent durability will find the iPhone 16e a compelling choice.
