Are you receiving unwanted video and voice calls on WhatsApp from unknown international numbers? You’re not alone. Scammers have found a new way to target unsuspecting users and are using WhatsApp to do so. This article highlights the growing issue of scam calls and messages on WhatsApp, particularly in India.

The Menace of WhatsApp Scam Calls and Messages

Several WhatsApp users in India have reported receiving scam calls from international numbers. While most of these are robocalls, some scammers are posing as HRs and luring people with the promise of jobs. Users are advised not to engage with such calls/messages for their safety.

How Scammers Obtain Users’ Phone Numbers

It’s unclear how scammers are obtaining users’ phone numbers, whether they are using bots or manually targeting individuals. However, the process of obtaining VoIP numbers for WhatsApp is straightforward, and scammers are using this to target unsuspecting users. From the number of complaints being raised on Twitter, this phenomenon seems to be well-organised, and these scammers are likely operating as a mafia.

Why Are People Getting These Calls?

The proliferation of scam calls, particularly on WhatsApp, appears to be unprecedented. While scammers have been using conventional text messaging (SMS) for a long time to target people, the scale at which they are using WhatsApp seems new.

One Twitter user shared a screenshot of a WhatsApp message he received from a scammer who introduced themselves as “HR Priscilla Barret” and offered him a part-time job. The job was to earn Rs 50 per like on YouTube videos and up to “10000 Rs” per day, which is clearly a scam.

Scammers’ Omnichannel Approach

According to a senior communication consultant, the scam process has become more digital and omnichannel, including WhatsApp messages, SMS, and LinkedIn messages. He added that he receives a minimum of two calls a week, in addition to WhatsApp messages and LinkedIn messages.

What You Can Do to Protect Yourself

WhatsApp has been conducting awareness campaigns online and offline, encouraging users not to engage with these scam calls and messages. However, users should also exercise caution and not accept any unverified calls or messages from international numbers. Telegram is also experiencing the same phenomenon, so it’s essential to be vigilant and protect yourself from these scams.

Conclusion

Scam calls and spam messages are a significant problem globally, and the rise of WhatsApp scam calls and messages is a growing concern. Users should be aware of these scams and avoid engaging with unknown international numbers. By staying vigilant, users can protect themselves from falling prey to these scammers.
