Tesla is finally making its much-anticipated entry into India’s electric vehicle (EV) market, with the opening of its first Experience Centre in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on July 15, 2025. After years of regulatory delays and import duty roadblocks, Elon Musk’s EV giant is gearing up to establish a local presence and kickstart operations in one of the world’s fastest-growing automobile markets.

Key Highlights

Initial stock includes six Tesla Model Y units (standard and long-range variants)

Imports also include Superchargers and EV accessories worth $1 million

Tesla aims for aggressive pricing, possibly below $25,000 (approx. ₹22 lakh)

Plans underway for Delhi and Bengaluru rollouts in Q3 2025

Tesla’s First Showroom in India: Mumbai BKC

According to a report by Reuters, Tesla has officially invited media personnel to the opening of its first Indian showroom, also known as an Experience Centre, on July 15. The 4,000 sq. ft. centre is located at the heart of Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) — Mumbai’s prime commercial district.

Tesla is reportedly paying a monthly rent of ₹35 lakh, or about ₹900 per square foot, for the ground floor unit in a commercial tower. The Experience Centre will serve as a hub for showcasing Tesla’s EV technologies, vehicles, and customer engagement initiatives in India.

Vehicles and Accessories Imported to India

To support its initial launch, Tesla is said to have imported six Model Y units, in both standard and long-range configurations:

Standard Model Y: Approx. $32,500 (~₹28 lakh)

Long-range Model Y: Approx. $46,000 (~₹39 lakh)

The company has also imported EV chargers and Superchargers worth $1 million (~₹8.57 crore) from the US and China. These are expected to be strategically deployed across high-traffic zones and key metro areas.

While imported EVs attract an import duty of nearly 70%, Tesla’s product pricing in India may still be competitive if the company benefits from recently announced duty relaxations on EV imports under certain conditions.

Tesla’s Pricing Strategy for India

Although final prices are yet to be officially confirmed, Tesla has reportedly set a target to launch its first car in India under $25,000 (~₹22 lakh), aiming to attract cost-sensitive buyers. For reference, the Tesla Model 3, its most affordable car globally, starts at $40,000 (~₹35 lakh) in international markets.

Tesla’s pricing in India will be crucial in determining its mass-market appeal, especially in a market dominated by homegrown and competitively priced EVs like Tata’s Nexon EV and MG’s Comet EV.

Expansion Plans: Delhi, Bengaluru, and More

Following Mumbai, Tesla is expected to open its second Experience Centre in Delhi, most likely at the Aerocity complex, known for housing top-tier global brands.

Sales operations are projected to begin in Q3 2025, targeting metro cities including Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru as key initial markets.

Tesla’s India entry is expected to have a ripple effect across the Indian EV ecosystem, potentially accelerating infrastructure development and increasing competition among existing players.

Final Thoughts

Tesla’s debut in India marks a significant milestone in the country’s transition towards sustainable mobility. With premium technology, a globally recognized brand, and a robust rollout strategy, Tesla’s presence could redefine expectations in the EV space.

The July 15 opening of the Mumbai BKC Experience Centre is not just the beginning of Tesla’s India journey — it could also be a catalyst for transforming the Indian EV landscape.

Stay tuned as Tesla powers into India’s EV future.
