India’s personal computer (PC) market experienced steady growth in 2024, with shipments reaching 14.4 million units, marking a 3.8% year-over-year (YoY) increase, according to the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. The market expansion was driven by strong demand for notebooks, desktops, and workstations, alongside increasing consumer interest in gaming and AI-powered PCs.

 

Key Market Insights

Notebook Shipments: Grew by 4.5% YoY, contributing significantly to overall market growth.

 

Desktop Shipments: Increased by 1.8% YoY, maintaining steady demand.

 

Workstations: Recorded the highest growth at 10.9% YoY, highlighting increased enterprise adoption.

 

Premium Notebook Segment (> $1,000): Surged by 13.8% YoY, indicating a shift toward high-end computing solutions.

 

 

 

Quarterly Performance (4Q24)

The fourth quarter of 2024 (4Q24) saw an overall 6.9% YoY market growth, driven primarily by:

 

Notebook sales, which surged by 9.6% YoY.

 

Strong consumer demand, particularly in the eTailer segment, which grew 29% YoY in 4Q24.

 

Channel stocking ahead of year-end and Republic Day sales, boosting sales in late December and January.

Consumer Market Growth

The consumer PC market expanded by 2.6% YoY in 2024, supported by a robust online retail presence.

 

eTailer channel surged by 21.7% YoY in 2024, emphasizing the growing preference for online shopping.

 

The gaming segment continued to flourish, driving sales of high-performance notebooks and AI-powered laptops.

 

Commercial Market Growth

The commercial segment witnessed a 5.1% YoY increase in FY2024, with strong growth in 4Q24 (11.1% YoY).

 

Demand from global enterprises and government departments, including Government e-Marketplace (GeM) purchases, fueled this expansion.

 

The enterprise and government segments each saw a 10.6% YoY rise, highlighting sustained investments in digital infrastructure.

 

Top 5 PC Brands in India (2024)

HP Inc. – Market Leader (30.1% Share)

 

Dominated both consumer and commercial segments.

Enterprise (+14.3% YoY) and government (+14.7% YoY) sectors fueled growth.

However, consumer segment fell by 7.5% YoY due to intensified competition in online sales.

 

Lenovo – Strong Growth (17.2% Share)

 

Consumer (+7% YoY) and commercial (+7.4% YoY) segments expanded.

Enterprise demand and eTailer partnerships drove 7.3% YoY growth.

 

Dell Technologies – Third Spot (16.1% Share)

 

Second-largest player in the commercial segment (21% share).

Enterprise and SMB demand bolstered its position.

Slipped to fifth place in the consumer segment, despite 3.9% YoY growth.

 

Acer Group – Fastest Growth (15.1% Share)

 

Consumer segment surged 48.4% YoY, thanks to aggressive pricing and discounts.

Commercial segment grew 16.6% YoY, led by SMB and government orders.

 

Asus – Market Challenges (7% Share)

 

Declined 7.8% YoY, maintaining a healthy inventory strategy.

However, commercial business expanded by 18.4% YoY, showing potential in enterprise sales.

 

Future Outlook for India’s PC Market

According to Navkendar Singh, Associate VP, IDC India, the commercial PC sector is expected to continue its positive momentum, driven by:

 

Replacement cycles for 2020-21 purchases, leading to refresh demand.

Government and enterprise orders supporting the market’s stability.

AI-powered PCs gaining traction, particularly in premium and gaming segments.

 

However, potential challenges include:

 

A weakening rupee, which could raise PC prices, impacting price-sensitive SMB and consumer buyers.

Uncertain macroeconomic conditions, which may affect enterprise spending patterns.

 

Despite these hurdles, the Indian PC market is projected to achieve low single-digit growth in 2025, continuing its upward trajectory in both consumer and commercial segments.
