WhatsApp is testing a novel group voice chat feature, resembling the concept of Twitter Spaces, allowing up to 32 participants to engage in a single voice conversation within a group setting. This feature is currently under experimentation and holds the potential to reshape group communication dynamics on the platform.
Testing the Waters with Voice Chats
WABetaInfo, a reliable source for tracking WhatsApp beta features, recently revealed the testing of this group voice chat feature in the latest beta version of WhatsApp. Much like Twitter Spaces, where users can participate in open audio conversations, WhatsApp is exploring a similar avenue within its group chats.
How to Initiate and Engage in Group Voice Chats
According to the information shared by WABetaInfo, a distinct waveform-like icon will be integrated next to the group name. Upon tapping this icon, a voice chat session will be activated. A unique characteristic of this feature is that group members will not receive notifications when a voice chat is initiated.

The process of joining the conversation is simplified. Any group member can join the ongoing voice chat by simply tapping the “Connect” button placed below the group’s name during an active voice chat session.
Operational Mechanics and Possible Release Date
Reports indicate that there are no strict limitations on who can participate in the voice chat, granting accessibility to any member within the group. Notably, the voice chat automatically concludes if no participants join the conversation for 60 minutes. However, there seems to be no maximum time duration as long as at least one participant remains.
It’s important to note that this feature is currently available on the mobile version of WhatsApp and not on WhatsApp Web. Although in its testing phase, it’s expected that WhatsApp will refine and polish the feature based on user feedback before a broader release.
As of now, this feature is accessible to beta users on Android devices, but not all beta users have been granted access. WhatsApp typically deploys new features for beta testing for a span of 1 to 2 weeks before incorporating them into the stable version.
The Future of WhatsApp Group Communication
WhatsApp has exhibited a proactive approach in introducing innovative features this year. From ephemeral video chat messages akin to Snapchat to the ongoing exploration of group voice chats similar to Twitter Spaces, the platform is evolving its communication offerings to align with users’ dynamic preferences.
As this feature inches closer to a potential rollout, WhatsApp users can anticipate a more collaborative and interactive group communication experience, enabling seamless voice-based interactions within their groups.
