Prime Minister Modi envisions a self-reliant India by 2047

From Import Reliance to Domestic Manufacturing Dominance

India’s transition from a market dependent on imports to a thriving manufacturing hub has been nothing short of remarkable. The country now ranks as the second-largest mobile manufacturing nation in the world, with significant growth since the start of the Make in India program:

2014-2015: 26% of mobile phones sold in India were manufactured locally.

2024: 99.2% of mobile phones sold in India are now manufactured domestically.

India now produces between 325 to 330 million mobile phones annually, with a market value growing from Rs. 18,900 crore in FY14 to Rs. 4,22,000 crore in FY24.

Economic Growth and Job Creation

The growth in the electronics sector has also created substantial job opportunities, adding over 12 lakh jobs to the economy in the last decade. This job creation has helped boost the standard of living for many and strengthened India’s position in the global electronics market.

Expanding Domestic Component Production

The ‘Make in India’ initiative has facilitated not only mobile phone production but also the domestic manufacturing of key components. India now produces:

Basic Components: Chargers, battery packs, and USB cables.

Advanced Components: Lithium-ion cells, display assemblies, microphones, and camera modules.

This self-sufficiency in component production ensures a stronger supply chain and supports the growth of India’s mobile manufacturing capabilities.

India’s Move Towards Semiconductor Manufacturing

A major focus for the government now is to strengthen semiconductor manufacturing. The India Semiconductor Mission has already initiated five major projects to foster this industry. Key players such as Micron, Tata Electronics, and CG Power are now involved in building a robust semiconductor ecosystem in India, setting the stage for India’s emergence as a semiconductor powerhouse.

Broader Impact of ‘Make in India’

The ‘Make in India’ initiative has had far-reaching effects beyond mobile manufacturing:

Toy Exports: A 239% increase in toy exports has reduced India’s dependency on imports.

Global Recognition: Indian MSMEs are now gaining international recognition for products like electronics, textiles, and clothing.

Diversification of Manufacturing: The initiative has expanded into sectors like defense equipment, electric vehicle motors, and textiles.

Prime Minister Modi’s Vision for a Self-Reliant India by 2047

In line with India’s aspirations, Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi recently outlined his vision for India to be a self-reliant nation by 2047, coinciding with the centenary of India’s independence. He emphasized that Make in India’ is a critical component of this vision, calling for a united effort across all sectors to build a prosperous and globally competitive India.

Conclusion:

India’s mobile manufacturing sector has experienced explosive growth over the past decade, with the country now producing nearly all of its mobile phones domestically. As India continues to deepen its manufacturing capabilities, particularly in semiconductors and other critical components, it is positioning itself as a key player on the global stage. The ‘Make in India’ initiative remains central to this transformation, propelling India towards a future of self-reliance and economic strength.
